Camille LaBranche Blog post #5 Ex-D.C. teacher sentenced to 25 years for child porn

A man named Eric Toth, who worked as a teacher in D.C used hidden cameras that he disguised as air freshener to obtain videos of elementary school children using the bathroom. There’s said to be 17 different victims and 23 separate instances of the child porn.

One of his cameras was found at Beauvoir, the school he taught at, but before he could be found out and arrested, he fled the United States and went to many different places like Arizona, Texas and Nicaragua for 5 years. In 2012 he was even put on a vacant space on the FBI’s most wanted list, taking Osama Bin Laden’s place. In court he pleaded guilty and as a result of his actions he was sentenced to 25 years in prison, and once he is released he will be under court ordered supervision until he dies. He also has to register as a sex offender, receive the treatment for sex offenders, and observe many limits on his use of the Internet and the limits of his contacts with minors. Essentially his life is over. Most companies don’t want to get sued for negligent hiring so he will never get a job as a teacher again. He violated a constitutional and human right to privacy by producing all of his child pornography to unsuspecting children, so in this case I believe the punishment does fit the crime also because after his 25 year sentence he will never be able to produce child pornography again through the supervision that the judge and court has put on him.

No matter who a person is or what party or side one associates himself with, child pornography isn’t something that’s generally accepted in societies. It’s not a controversial topic like abortion or gay marriage, rather it’s something the majority human beings (in our country at least) see as morally unacceptable and wrong. It violates our privacy and innocence, some things we all hold as precious and invaluable. Hopefully other men and women like Toth will also receive the same or similar punishments and face those punishments if they have not already, because we certainly would have a better country without them.
